About Sycle
At Sycle, we’re transforming how audiology practices operate. Our cloud-based practice management platform powers over 20,000 users worldwide - from local clinics to enterprise retailers - helping them streamline operations and deliver better patient care. We’re a growing SaaS company with startup energy, industry respect, and global reach.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to serve as the technical anchor for our team as we pivot to an AI-driven, agentic development workflow.
In this role, you will bridge architecture and execution by defining how our team safely leverages approved AI tools for implementation planning, code reviews, test generation, and refactoring. Success in this role means scaling—not replacing—human engineering judgment to achieve risk-free velocity. You will be directly accountable for:
- Governed AI Adoption: Ensuring the team utilizes AI tools transparently, safely, and in full compliance with company policies.
- Optimized Delivery Flow: Driving measurable lifecycle improvements, including faster PR cycle times, quicker debugging, and tighter developer feedback loops.
- Reliable Verification & Quality Gates: Ensuring all AI-assisted changes are rigorously backed by automated tests, shadow runs, evaluation sets, and clear acceptance criteria before reaching production.
- Production Integrity: Accelerating delivery speed while maintaining a 0% increase in critical defects, security vulnerabilities, or operational risk.
Tech Stack & Tools
Backend & Cloud: PHP (Laravel), Node.js (Nestjs), AWS, Microservices, RESTful APIs, SQL/NoSQL
Frontend: React (Nextjs), modern open-source web technologies
AI Tooling & Orchestration: Approved AI development tools and model access patterns, Claude via AWS Bedrock, code-review and test-generation agents, prompt/instruction management, evaluation frameworks, RAG/context pipelines where appropriate, and orchestration tools such as LangChain, Semantic Kernel, or similar.
Key Pillars of Responsibility
- Team Technical Lead: Drive the architecture and technical patterns for your team's projects, ensuring seamless integration between core PHP/Node services and AWS.
- Guardrails & Compliance: Define team-level practices (automated tests, static analysis, security checks) to keep AI and human code safe. Partner with security teams to ensure workflows strictly comply with PHI, data retention, and auditability policies.
- AI Workflow Improvement: Fix the system, not just the code. When AI outputs are weak, systematically improve repository instructions, prompts, evaluation rules, or context sources to prevent future errors.
- Mentorship & Pairing: Coach mid and senior engineers on effective AI orchestration—teaching them to break down work, critically review generated code, and identify when manual engineering judgment is required.
- Cross-Functional Translation: Partner with Product Owners to convert business requirements and Gherkin/BDD specs into clear technical plans and acceptance criteria optimized for AI-assisted tools.
Skills & Requirements
- Core Engineering Expertise: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep technical command of PHP (Laravel) and Node.js.
- Modern Architecture: Proven experience designing scalable RESTful APIs, distributed microservices, CI/CD pipelines, and optimized databases.
- Agentic Proficiency: Hands-on experience moving beyond basic LLM chat to orchestrate parallel, multi-agent workflows for autonomous code and test generation.
- Rigorous Verification: Strong background in automated testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright) and defining strict failure scenarios to catch defects before human review.
- Accountability: A strong "verify output" mindset, taking full responsibility for the security and quality of production code, regardless of how it was generated.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written skills to effectively convey technical and AI concepts to both technical teammates and product stakeholders.
Bonus Points
- Experience working within Healthcare IT or Practice Management Software.
- Side projects or courses demonstrating experimentation with LLM fine-tuning or agentic frameworks.
Benefits
- Comprehensive personal health plan (Medical, Dental, Vision).
- RRSP matching and Internet subsidy.
- 3+ weeks of paid time off plus paid statutory holidays.
Note: We are only hiring candidates located withinBritish Columbia (BC), Alberta (AB), or Ontario (ON).
