About the Role

Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department, these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end March 31, 2027.

The Shot Clock Operator is responsible for managing the 24-second shot clock during MRU Cougars basketball games. Working courtside with the official scoring crew, the operator ensures the shot clock is accurately started, stopped, and reset in accordance with FIBA rules and referee signals. This role is critical to the integrity of the game, as the shot clock directly affects offensive possessions and overall game flow.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of basketball rules, particularly those related to timing and possession. The position demands quick reflexes, excellent focus, and confidence in decision-making under pressure. Experience with timekeeping, officiating, or playing basketball is a major asset. The Shot Clock Operator plays a key part in delivering a smooth and professional game-day experience, making this an excellent role for a candidate interested in the technical and operational side of sport.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, test and use the shot clock; troubleshoot as required
  • Coordinate with officials to properly operate shot clock
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with officials, coaches and team staff
  • Adapt and help the game day team where needed as required by Game Day Supervisor
  • Ensure all requirements and regulations set-out by Canada West and U SPORTS are met and followed with the Game Day team

Qualifications

  • 12 - 18 months of related experience
  • Passion for sports with a strong knowledge of basketball
  • Ability to work all shifts between Thursday - Sunday afternoons and evenings.
  • Highly motivated individual who can work well independently
  • Clear and consistent verbal communication skills
  • Strong focus and attention to detail
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Commitment to time management and punctuality
  • Ability to lift items of up to 50lbs on an occasional basis

Salary:$15.45 - $19.44 per hour
