Position Summary: In conjunction with HSE Director, Develops and maintains company policies adhering to local, provincial and federal Environmental, Health and Safety regulations for both Johnston Equipment and Konstant. Involved in the design and development of facilities, work areas and work procedures and makes EHS recommendations accordingly. Ensures compliance with all EHS regulations, and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Assist identifying relevant health & safety training needs and opportunities. Develop/Source and implement Environmental, Health and Safety training as required.
  • Provide guidance and support to managers on safety related programs, policies and procedures to ensure legislative and policy compliance.
  • Advise supervisory/management of Health and Safety training requirements for all employees to ensure program and legislative compliance
  • Provide support and guidance to management to ensure compliance with relevant provincial environmental legislations including waste & hazardous waste management as well as emergency response/reporting protocols.
  • Communicate policies and procedures to all stakeholders
  • Act as a resource for Joint Health and Safety Committees and representatives within the regions to ensure legislative compliance to the program policies and Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Administer all CNESST claims and coordinate with Windley Ely and management.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with industrial sector OHSA standards and local legislation.
  • Monitor health & safety systems and advise HSE Director on system performance; publish statistics regarding performance against set goals.
  • Perform gap analysis between applicable standards.
  • Perform internal health & safety audits that are compliant with corporate policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Oversee Contractor Management program including pre-qualification, monitoring and reporting activities
  • Conduct safety training as required. Training maybe in person or virtual.
  • Prepare health and safety training reports as required

  • Works under limited supervision, conferring with HSE Director on unusual matters.
  • Assignments are broad, usually requiring originality and ingenuity.
  • Operates with appreciable latitude for action and decision.
  • Projects can be large/complex in scope and generally have impact at an individual, departmental, divisional level.
  • Maintains a general knowledge of the business and the material handling industry. Promote the well-being of employees in the workplace.
  • Assist in developing health & safety improvement initiatives within all Johnston Equipment branches
  • Assist management in accident/incident/illness investigations
  • Promote and advocate health and safety performance improvement across the organization.
  • Using TPS methodology, apply standard work format into all H&S related activities.
  • Monitor and report actual performance to target objectives on a monthly basis.
  • Respond to inquiries and address concerns of employees and managers relating to health and safety.
  • Analyze workplace accident/incident history and make recommendations to branch management and HSE Director to reduce and eliminate hazards in the workplace.
  • Plays a leadership role to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Acts as internal EHS consultant providing leadership, guidance and advice on a wide range of EHS topics. Maintains presence in regional operations to ensure open communication with all employees.
  • Communicates policies to organization including print and oral communication programs. Identifies opportunities for additional programs and policies; makes recommendations. Assists with annual review of Safety Manual and/or Environmental Manual and ensuring recommendations for any required changes are properly evaluated and implemented.
  • Oversees Hazard and Risk Assessment program for organization ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations and standards.
  • Ensures timely reporting of and investigations into all work related incidents and ensures corrective action has been identified and implemented.
  • Communicates organization’s emergency plans and coordinates required drills.
  • Tracks and ensures closure of all corrective actions in a timely manner, coordinating with Operations, Facilities/Maintenance and other Departments and/or outside partners as necessary.
  • Back up support for Johnston and/or Konstant H&S Specialist in all areas of health and safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
