About the Role

Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor and Coordinator, the lifeguard is responsible for the safeguarding of guests and staff in the aquatic facility by providing exceptional safety supervision, preventing incidents, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards have strong interpersonal and communication skills and provide excellent customer service while maintaining a clean and safe facility.

Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department, these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end April 23, 2027.

Responsibilities

Aquatic Centre Safety and Supervision

  • Supervise all aquatic areas through continuous, effective scanning and patrolling to prevent incidents and ensure a safe swimming environment.
  • Prevent incidents: Identify and correct unsafe behaviours before accidents occur. Enforce facility rules consistently and respectfully.
  • Respond rapidly to aquatic emergencies including water rescues and administering first aid or CPR as required.

Facility Operations and Maintenance

  • Perform daily operational tasks such as water tests, head counts, mechanical checks, safety checks, and daily maintenance tasks. Document these tasks accurately and promptly.
  • Support opening and closing procedures.
  • Complete first aid reports and pool contamination reports as needed.
  • Report facility hazards or deficiencies to Head Guard (Lifeguard II) or supervisory staff.

Customer Service and Public Relations

  • Provide exceptional customer service by greeting patrons, answering questions, and promoting a positive, inclusive atmosphere. Handle customer concerns calmly and effectively, referring issues to a supervisor when necessary.
  • Educate the public about aquatic safety, facility policies, and proper use of equipment.
  • Promote recreation programs and water safety awareness.

Professional Development and Teamwork

  • Demonstrate teamwork, reliability, and professionalism by supporting colleagues and promoting a positive workplace culture. Willing and able to share ideas and take constructive criticism.
  • Participate actively in all in-service training.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Model appropriate conduct on and off deck.
  • Assist with special events or tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, Intermediate First Aid, and CPR-C certifications are required - all valid within 2 years
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Preference is given to applicants that also hold Lifesaving Swim Instructor certification, Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner/CPR-I certification, National Lifeguard Instructor certification, and are a student

Salary: $15.45 - $19.44 per hour
