The Team:

The Resource Stewardship Division in the Skeena Region is at the forefront of balancing environmental stewardship with sustainable resource management across one of British Columbia’s most diverse landscapes. The team works closely with Indigenous Nations, communities, industry, and partners to deliver impactful, science-based solutions. Fast-paced, collaborative, and purpose-driven, this is meaningful work that helps shape the future of BC’s natural resources.

The Role:

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to wildlife habitat modelling and stewardship across the Skeena Region’s vast and ecologically rich landscapes. Through a blend of fieldwork, data analysis, and collaboration with biologists, First Nations, and forestry professionals, this position helps generate the information that guides wildlife conservation and resource management decisions. From exploring priority habitats and collecting critical ecological data to supporting model validation and program planning, the work is dynamic, hands-on, and makes a tangible impact on the ground.

Qualifications: Education:

  • Bachler’s of Science Degree, or higher, in a natural resources field and three (3) years of related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Related Experience may include:

  • Experience planning and carrying out field data collection activities, including data quality control, and reporting.
  • Experience conducting a variety of field measurements to specifications.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Current registered credentials with one or preferably both:
  • Forest Professionals BC; and/or
  • BC College of Applied Biologists
  • Experience designing, leading, and overseeing a field-based, terrestrial ecosystem data collection project in the Skeena Region.
  • Experience using ArcGIS to generate maps and perform routine analyses.
  • Experience using Program R for data exploration and quality control.
  • Experience in Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping in BC.
  • Experience with wetland classification.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid BC driver’s licence.
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Able to conduct fieldwork, which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • Must meet safety standards of WorkSafeBC.

About this Position:

There is currently one temporary opportunity available to March 31st, 2027; this may be extended.

This position is located in Smithers.

This location receives a $39.92 bi-weekly isolation allowance.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.

Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary vacancies in Smithers.
