Emergency Room RN Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

  • Triaging patients based on clinical urgency
  • Assessing patients with illnesses, injuries, and life-threatening conditions
  • Providing rapid stabilization and emergency nursing care
  • Administering medications, blood products, and IV therapies
  • Assisting with resuscitation and emergency procedures
  • Monitoring patients for changes in condition
  • Caring for patients with cardiac, neurological, respiratory, and traumatic emergencies
  • Preparing patients for admission, transfer, surgery, or discharge
  • Maintaining accurate electronic health records
  • Educating patients and families
  • Collaborating with physicians, paramedics, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Following infection prevention and patient-safety procedures

Minimum Requirements

  • Canadian citizenship; required for TN visa eligibility
  • Active Canadian RN registration in good standing
  • NCLEX-RN successfully completed
  • Eligibility to obtain a nursing licence in the applicable U.S. state
  • At least one year of recent hospital-based Emergency Room or Emergency Department RN experience
  • Current Basic Life Support certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification
  • Strong English communication and documentation skills
  • Willingness to relocate to the United States
  • Ability to satisfy hospital screening and health requirements

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred and may be required by certain hospital employers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • VisaScreen or Visa4Nurses Certificate completed or in progress
  • Two or more years of recent ER nursing experience
  • Trauma centre experience
  • Paediatric emergency nursing experience
  • Current PALS, TNCC, ENPC, or emergency nursing certification
  • Experience with triage, resuscitation, and high-acuity patients
  • Experience with ventilators, cardiac monitoring, and conscious sedation

ER Nurse Pay and Benefits

Hospital employers offer approximately $31 to $55 USD per hour, depending on the position, location, schedule, and experience. This is approximately $43 to $76 CAD per hour for comparison. Exchange rates fluctuate, and employees are paid in U.S. dollars.
