Summary:
As Quality Control Inspector—Dimensional, your primary responsibility will be to verify the dimensional accuracy of ship structures (parts, assemblies/blocks) as well as the installation and alignment of ship outfitting systems during construction or repair projects, according to the quality control plan. To do so, you will need to obtain the relevant documentation, verify the procedures and tooling to be used during dimensional inspections, perform the inspections, and review the results to ensure compliance with requirements. You will also be responsible for gathering quality evidence (records and reports) that confirm the tests and inspections are properly carried out.
Responsibilities:
- Review procedures and shipyard/classification standards necessary for each project.
- Read and interpret project specifications and technical drawings to prepare inspection plans.
- Understand project-specific requirements and ensure that work is carried out in accordance with specifications, regulations, standards, and internal procedures.
- Conduct medium-to large-scale dimensional control inspections during production using survey instruments such as total stations, laser trackers, laser scanners, as per the inspection plan.
- Verify correct position and alignment of structures or mechanical components during assembly or installation.
- Analyze measurement results using software such as SpatialAnalyzer or PolyWorks to detect dimensional and geometrical errors.
- Identify any non-conformities following an inspection and assist in addressing these non-conformities to facilitate their resolution.
- Present the inspection plan and results to the client and ensure the outcome meets the requirements and is satisfactory to the client.
- Perform calibration tests to verify the accuracy of available tooling and instruments on site.
- Participate in the modification and revision of operating procedures and collaborate with other teams to improve work efficiency and dimensional accuracy.
- Participate in the creation and revision of documents (such as operational procedures for inspection, inspection reports, quality assurance audits, and technical system documentation).
Requirements:
- Have five (5) years of experience in quality control within the manufacturing industry (a background in surveying/metrology and shipyard work experience are considered assets).
- Possess a technical diploma (DVS) or a degree in geomatics; marine or mechanical engineering, or machining, or have equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of surveying techniques and operating different measuring and alignment instruments (such as auto levels, total stations, laser trackers, laser scanners and dial gauges) is considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret specifications, technical drawings, and 3D models, and familiarity with dimensional and geometrical tolerances.
- Knowledge of modelling software (such as AutoCAD, Rhino) and metrology software such as SpatialAnalyzer or PolyWorks.
- Attention to detail and strong analytical skills to interpret the measured data and prepare measurement reports.
- In-depth knowledge of quality control procedures, record-keeping, and systems.
- Proficiency in French and English (written and spoken). Fluency in English is required for this position, as you will interact with English-speaking suppliers.
- Knowledge of classification society regulations (Lloyd’s, ABS, etc.) is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a team and in the presence of clients.
- Willingness and ability to learn quickly and find creative solutions to complete tasks.
