About MarkiTech MarkiTech is a Canadian healthcare technology company building AI-powered software that helps healthcare organizations improve clinical workflows, automate documentation, and deliver better patient care. We develop secure, scalable applications that integrate with electronic medical records (EMRs), healthcare APIs, and modern cloud infrastructure. We’re looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join our team on a contract basis and help build healthcare applications with a strong focus on EMR integrations and backend services. Role Overview As a Backend Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain backend services powering our healthcare platforms. You’ll work closely with product managers, frontend developers, AI engineers, and clinical stakeholders to build secure, reliable, and scalable solutions. A key part of this role is integrating with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and other healthcare platforms using industry standards and vendor-specific APIs.
Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
Build and maintain RESTful APIs and backend microservices.
Collaborate with frontend developers working in React to support application features.
Design efficient database schemas and optimize backend performance. Develop integrations with EMR systems and third-party healthcare platforms.
Implement authentication, authorization, and secure data exchange mechanisms.
Work with healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR and HL7 where applicable.
Troubleshoot production issues and improve application reliability. Participate in architecture discussions and technical planning.
Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
Contribute to code reviews and engineering best practices.

Required Qualifications:

3+ years of professional software development experience.
Strong JavaScript and TypeScript skills.
Extensive experience with Node.js.
Experience working with React-based applications.
Strong understanding of REST APIs and API design.
Experience designing scalable backend architectures.
Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows. Healthcare & EMR Experience (Required)
Candidates must have prior experience integrating healthcare applications with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:Epic Oracle Health (Cerner) MEDITECH eClinicalWorks Athenahealth Allscripts (Veradigm) OSCAR EMR TELUS Health platforms Accuro EMR Additional experience with: HL7 FHIR SMART on FHIR OAuth 2.0 Healthcare APIs Clinical data exchange Patient records and scheduling integrations is considered a strong asset. Preferred Qualifications Experience deploying applications to cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS, or Azure. Experience with Docker and containerized applications.
