The Role:
Public Health Ontario is looking for a student to join our Quality Improvement (QI) team. One of PHO’s strategic directions in the 2024-29 Strategic Plan is to “accelerate moving evidence to action as the convener and integrator of expertise on public health issues and drive quality improvement for public health.” This student role is an opportunity to contribute to foundational quality improvement work, applying critical thinking, project implementation and management, process improvement, and written communication skills to support provincial QI work and planning.

Duration: until end of March 2027 (up to 6 months)
Hours of work: Up to 21.75 hours (3 days) per week

Key Responsibilities-

Reporting to the Manager, Quality Improvement, you will perform the following responsibilities:

• Contribute to the development and implementation of tools and processes to advance QI education training opportunities for PHO staff and public health unit partners (e.g., streamlining and overseeing registration processes, supporting event planning, contributing to QI resource toolkit development).
• Contribute to the development of emails, reports, slides, and/or other products tailored for different audiences.
• Apply critical thinking skills in working with internal and/or external partners to understand current processes and objectives, identify opportunities, and outline next steps for QI initiatives.
• Share insights and reflections to help co-design QI work.
• Become familiar with PHO’s policies, procedures, and processes (e.g., Privacy, Communications) and support activities related to these areas.
• Support planning and coordination for meetings (e.g., QI Education planning, advisory committee), including secretariat support, meeting logistics, and documentation, as needed.
• Work collaboratively with members of the QI team, colleagues, and public health units to produce high quality products and deliverables.

Knowledge and Skills-

• Strong time-management and organizational skills, including ability to use project management tools (e.g., creating or updating Gantt charts).
• Strong written communication skills, with ability to apply these skills to different products and audiences.
• Interest and ability to learn about and apply quality improvement and automation tools and approaches.
• Ability to apply critical thinking skills, including at a system-level.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.

Education and Experience-

• Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a post-secondary program which focuses on Public Health, Health Administration, Science, Education, Technology, or Industrial Engineering.
• Strong familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Experience with SharePoint website management is an asset.

Compensation Group:Association of Management, Administrative and Professional Crown Employees of Ontario

Compensation Range:$47,595.00 - $59,360.00
