WORK HOURS AND SCHEDULE:The regular working hours for this position are 35 hours per week, consisting of 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Standard working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Family Support Program is a Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and Youth and Children Mental Health (YCMH) referred program that provides family preservation, stabilization, and support services to families, caregivers, and youth.

The program supports parents, foster parents, and primary caregivers in addressing behavioural concerns and strengthening caregiver-child/youth relationships through emotional support, practical tools, skill development, and collaborative problem-solving. Family Support Workers provide individualized and group-based support, help families develop effective strategies, and connect caregivers with appropriate community resources and services. The program is focused on promoting family well-being, enhancing caregiver capacity, and supporting children and youth to remain connected within safe and supportive family environments.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Family Support Worker provides direct, relevant support services for parents and caregivers (and children and youth within the context of the family). The Program provides consultation for families to assist and guide them in the development of effective behaviour management techniques and promote healthy adult-child and youth relationships, bridge-transitions, and stabilize home placements for children and youth. In addition, a range of social, educational, community based, and outreach activities are provided to support empowerment and to strengthen the capacity of families to care for their children. Services span from individual interventions to group services that promote mutual aid.

The Family Support Worker provides education and support services out of the main SCSA office and within family homes with the hopes of decreasing multiple placements for children and youth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Intake, Assessment and Family Engagement: Create a welcoming environment, conduct intake and needs assessments, identify family goals and needs, and develop appropriate support strategies.
Caregiver and Parenting Support: Provide caregivers with education, resources, activities, and practical strategies to strengthen parenting skills, respond to children’s and youth’s behaviours, and improve family relationships.
Child and Youth Development and Support: Provide individualized educational information, resources, activities, and support that promote healthy development, self-esteem, resilience, strengths, and positive relationships.
Family, Community and Group Support: Assist caregivers and youth in developing formal and informal support networks, provide group family support services, and connect families with relevant community resources and services.
Program Collaboration, Development and Administration: Participate in agency and inter-agency meetings, contribute to program goals and budget management, maintain current resources and research, and complete accurate client, time, and expense records.
Professional Practice, Supervision and Accountability: Participate in regular performance evaluations, reflective clinical team supervision, and individual supervision with the Program Manager to support professional development, quality service delivery, and accountability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have or be working towards a Social Service Worker Diploma or related diploma/degree and experience in a similar or related position.
Experience working with individuals, families and communities impacted by childhood trauma.
Ability to provide positive, client-focused, strengths-based services to those most at need who are living in our communities.
Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous people in communities in this region, and from a variety of multicultural orientations and social locations.
Grounded in trauma-informed practice, attachment-based approaches, and cultural humility.
Current certification in Occupational First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or willingness to obtain.

Motivated, well organized, and detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and manage competing demands effectively.
Ability to develop and deliver engaging workshops, presentations, and educational activities for caregivers, children, youth, and community partners.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality and sign a pledge of confidentiality.
Undergo a Criminal Record Check
Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
