1 Driver (Lowbed/Dump Truck)
Department: Lil’wat Construction Enterprises
Status: Casual
Reporting to: Mines & Services Manager
Summary of Duties:
The Class 1 Driver
(Lowbed / Dump Truck) is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient
transportation of materials and heavy equipment at Lil’wat Construction
Enterprises job sites, including hauling excavators and other equipment using
trailers.
Key Deliverables and Expectations:
- Demonstrates
comprehensive knowledge of safety requirements on job sites including
personal protective equipment, safe vehicle operation, and hazard
awareness
- Demonstrates
functional knowledge of Class 1 truck and trailer operation including dump
truck hauling, lowbed transport, load securement, and weight distribution
- Demonstrates
basic operating techniques including pre-trip inspections of truck and
trailer systems (brakes, tires, hydraulics, lights, air systems,
tie-downs, and safety equipment)
- Displays
understanding of how to safely start, operate, maneuver, back up,
couple/uncouple trailers, load/unload equipment, and shut down truck
- Demonstrates
understanding of duties and responsibilities of the driver, road safety
rules, load securement requirements, and preventive maintenance practices
- Fill
out specialized safety paperwork, logbooks, and inspection reports as
required
- Physically
demanding: Frequently rotating (right/left) – check mirrors and blind
spots, eye/hand coordination, repetitive movements, sitting for long
periods of time, climbing in and out of truck and trailer
- Perform
routine vehicle and trailer maintenance and check-in procedures at the
start and check-out procedures at the end of shift including fueling,
fluid checks, greasing, and inspection of tie-downs – all maintenance
beyond routine requires mechanic authorization
- Keep
truck and trailer clean and in good working condition
- Always
operate the vehicle in a safe and legal manner; be alert to hazards and
follow safe work procedures
- Understands
complete scope of work including haul routes, delivery locations, and
equipment transport requirements
- Able
to read and understand site layouts and instructions for loading, hauling,
and unloading equipment
- Able
to maintain steady haul cycles to support productivity without abusing
equipment
- Organize
loads and materials appropriately for transport
- Hauling
aggregates, soil, rock, and other materials using dump truck configuration
- Hauling
heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, and other machinery using
trailers/lowbeds
- Safely
load, secure, transport, and unload heavy equipment in accordance with
regulations and company practices
- Coordinate
with equipment operators during loading and unloading
- Complete
daily paperwork in an orderly, logical and legible fashion including all
pertinent information
- Ensures
customer satisfaction by displaying a courteous and friendly demeanor
- Ensures
on-site quality control related to material handling and equipment
transport
- Always
maintain personal safety gear (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel-toed boots,
ear protection, eye protection, gloves)
- Task
specific personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn as needed
- Always
maintain foul weather gear at all times (rain gear, rubber boots)
- Perform
other activities at construction sites, as directed
- Arriving
at the scheduled assembly point on time and ready for work
- Perform
other related duties as requested
Experience and Attributes:
- Valid Class 1 Driver’s License (air brakes endorsement
required)
- Clean driver’s abstract is required
- 3+ years of Class 1 driving experience including trailer
hauling
- Experience hauling heavy equipment (excavators, loaders,
etc.) required
- Experience operating or assisting with loading heavy
equipment an asset
- Strong understanding of load securement and
provincial/federal transport regulations
- Training Assets: First Aid Level 1, WHMIS, BC Mine
Supervisor Certification
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal,
shares critical information, provides updates, asks questions to understand the
situation
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and follow
direction, properly identify priorities
- Strong time management skills; arrival at job sites on
time, follows communication policies when scheduling changes occur, works
efficiently to meet timelines
- Stays calm under pressure, in stressful or emergency
situations
- Builds strong working relationships with team members
- High standard of professionalism with clients and
co-workers
- Physically fit and mobile, able to lift up to 50 lbs,
able to work outside in variable conditions
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and
holidays if needed
- Ability to travel as required for the position
